Unable to travel to Port Aransas anytime soon? No problem! This mango salsa recipe is easy, delicious, and will give you serious island vibes wherever you are. Serve on top of salmon, chicken, or with your favorite tortilla chips. You really can’t go wrong with this salsa – except by not bringing enough to a party, because it always goes faster than you can imagine!

Be sure to check out the tips below to get the scoop on making the salsa ahead of time and getting the spiciness level just right.

Ingredients:

• 2 large mangos
• 6 small avocados
• ½ of a medium size red onion
• ½ of a jalapeño
• 1 bunch of cilantro
• 6-8 limes
• Kosher Salt

Directions:

Begin by dicing the mangos. Check out this video to see how to properly cut and dice a mango. Place the diced mango in a large bowl. Next, dice the avocados, and add to the bowl. Chop ½ of a medium size red onion and add. Next, chop half of one jalapeño and add to the mixture. Rinse and remove the stems from one bunch of cilantro, chop, and add to the bowl. Finally, add juice from about 6 limes and kosher salt to taste. Don’t be shy with the lime juice or salt! Serve immediately and your taste buds will be ocean side in no time.

Tip #1: Jalapeños vary in their spiciness level. Add the chopped jalapeño slowly and taste as you go. If you like spicier flavors, use a micro plane to grate some serrano pepper into the salsa along with the chopped jalapeño until the desired spice level is achieved.

Tip #2: To make the salsa ahead, add all the ingredients except red onion. Wait to add the red onion until just before serving, otherwise onions will “pickle” in the lime juice, changing the flavor of the salsa.

Tip #3: Serve this salsa on top of these salmon tacos (instead of the pineapple salsa suggested in the recipe). For a grain-free, low-calorie option, use jicama tortillas instead of corn or flour tortillas.

Coffee Waves Port Aransas provides artisan espresso and house-made gelato – and is the longest running coffee shop in Port Aransas! They love their locals, their out-of-towners, and making everyone feel at home.

A Love For Coffee and Community

Coffee Waves owner and founder, David Bendett, found a love for coffee at age 33 while living in Tulsa, Oklahoma. David’s friend introduced him to a specialty coffee shop, Nordaggios, which not only had amazing coffee, but was also buzzing with locals who were catching up and hanging out. Having not been a coffee drinker previously, David found a love for an afternoon Italian macchiato (espresso and steamed cream) and was struck by the way coffee brought the community together.

When David moved to Corpus Christi in 2006, he quickly discovered that there were no specialty coffee shops in the city – much less a coffee shop that felt like a local hang out spot. So, he decided to open up a coffee cart in the lobby of his church. Word spread, and similar to Nordaggios, artisan coffee and a place for community to gather was born.

After a few years of the Coffee Waves cart, the first brick and mortar shop opened in Corpus Christi in 2008. In 2010, the closure of an old dress shop provided the perfect opportunity to open a location in Port Aransas. Instead of a full remodel, Coffee Waves used what were previously the boutique’s dressing rooms as seating nooks for studying or hanging out. Coffee Waves quickly became the most popular coffee shop on the island. Now, Coffee Waves is not only a local gathering place, but also a staple destination for people traveling to Port A.

Weathering Hurricane Harvey

Coffee Waves in Port Aransas suffered a blow when Category 4 Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas Coast in 2017. With over 3 feet of storm surge pushed into the shop, major damage was done. But the staff and community came together, and clean up and renovations began. David’s wife, Amber, took the opportunity to completely redesign the shop, taking Coffee Waves from a dark European atmosphere to a modern and coastal feel. Coffee Waves reopened 4 months after the hurricane hit, on New Years Day 2018.

Only a 45-minute drive from Port Aransas, you’ll love exploring the subaquatic world at the Texas State Aquarium. Visit the Port Aransas Art Center

The Port Aransas Art Center  is a fun and easy way to pass some time on a rainy afternoon. The center was started 25 years ago by a group of artists who wanted to collaborate and share their art. Now, a full gallery is available to the public as well as classes and events. Get Creative at Fire it Ceramics
Tap into your inner artist and head the Fire it Ceramics , where you’ll be able to choose from a wide range of ceramics inventory and make the piece your very own! You’ll go to work painting anything from decorative pieces like animal or succulent figurines to functional ceramics like coffee mugs or planters. The team there will fire it for you, and you can pick your masterpiece up 1–3 days later or have it shipped for a small fee. Check out their Instagram page  to start dreaming up your work of art!

If you’re not in the mood to get your hands dirty but want to see a true artist at work, stop by Potters on Cotter  for a taste of local talent. Potters on Cotter is a small working gallery with wheel thrown stoneware, unique jewelry and a large selection of photo cards. You’ll be greeted by the warm smile of the owner, Brenda Barnett, and get to see her creating various masterpieces. Potters on Cotter is a great choice if you’re in the mood for a good story, a treasure trove of unique shopping, and a fun hole in the wall vibe!

Heading to Port Aransas during the Fourth of July? Not only is Port Aransas the perfect destination to enjoy a holiday that epitomizes summertime – the fireworks in Port A do not disappoint. Explosions are set off from Roberts Point Park at 301 JC Bar Blvd and will start around 9:30pm.

The fireworks show can be seen from just about anywhere in town – but if you want a close up view, you’ll need to get to the park early to claim a spot. Parking will be first come, first serve, and the Coast Guard will patrol the ship channel to keep boats at a safe distance.

If you’re up for an extra special view of the fireworks, there are multiple options for setting sail and watching from the sea! Don’t miss the unique opportunity to hop on a boat, grab a drink, and watch fireworks while sailing on the waters of the Gulf. Spots fill up fast, so be sure to book a spot ASAP on one of the following Independence Day cruises:

You will love watching fireworks from this smooth-sailing vessel.

A lesser-known option for viewing fireworks while at sea is The Pelican Fishing Boat. Their Firework Cruise begins at 8:30PM and alcohol will be available for purchase on board.

Expeditions will target Redfish, Blackdrum, Trout and Sheepshead depending on the time of year. You’ll set sail with owner and Captain JR Wood, who used to be a bronc-riding cowboy in Kansas and is now a fish-catching connoisseur. He was voted Boatmen of the Year in 2019 by Port Aransas Boatmen Inc. and says he usually wants his customers to catch fish more than they want to! 3. Schedule professional surfing lessons
Texas Surf Camps  offers private surfing and paddleboard lessons for all ages and skill levels year-round. All equipment is provided and with rates starting at $50, they are an affordable option for a fun experience in the water. With several seasoned instructors on their staff, this organization delivers when it comes to experience, teaching skills, and safety. All instructors are certified in CPR and First Aid, and many are also certified Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguards.

4. Go parasailing

Take to the sky with Chute ‘Em Up Parasail  and enjoy an exhilarating ride with amazing sights! You’ll strap into a swing-like harness and be pulled gently into the air by a parachute. With 500 feet of line, you’ll be reeled up to heights of up to 300 feet. Riders will take in views of the Gulf of Mexico, the Aransas Pass lighthouse, Aransas Bay, St. Joseph’s Island, and of course, dolphins playing in the water below! Walk-ins are welcome, but booking an appointment is the best way to secure a spot. With prices under $100, this is another great option for fun in the sun without breaking the bank!

Explore the island by bicycle! You can rent a beach cruiser for as little as $15 and explore all around the island. With cup-holders on each bike, you can ride easy with a beverage of choice on hand. Port A is a bike friendly city with lots of room for cyclists with bike lanes and wide sidewalks. Cruise down Cotter Avenue and J Carr Boulevard to get a fun view of the many beautiful docked boats, or take the bikes directly on the beach and ride along the shoreline for incredible views of the ocean. This local coffee shop never disappoints. Serving up coffee, espresso, tea, fresh made gelato, and panini sandwiches – there is something for everyone! TEMPORARY BEACH CURFEW – All Beaches within the geographic boundaries of Corpus Christi are subject to a curfew from 8:30 PM to 6:00 AM

TEMPORARY LIMITATION ON VEHICLE ACCESS TO BEACHES AND PARKS – Beaches and parks and with vehicular access points will be closed to vehicular access. Pedestrian access to the beaches and parks is permitted. Vehicle restrictions includes golf carts.

The restrictions noted regarding no tents, chairs, sitting down or laying down are listed in the Nueces County order for North Beach and McGee Beach ONLY.

The following properties provide boardwalk access to the beach for you and your family to still access and enjoy the beach until the curfew of 8:30 pm each evening for registered guests and owners only.  Click Here to check availability on the dates you are planning to visit Port Aransas and Mustang Island.

The Governor of Texas has released the following GA 29 order which at 12:01PM on July 3, 2020 every person in Texas shall wear a face covering over the nose and mouth when inside a commercial entity or other building or space open to the public or when in an outdoor public space, wherever it is not feasible to maintain six feed of social distancing from another person not in the same househould.  exceptions covered in the full GA-19 document FOUND HERE

FIREWORKS CANCELED

In light of the increase in COVID-19 cases throughout the Coastal Bend and Executive Order GA-28 from Governor Abbot, the City of Port Aransas 4th of July Fireworks Show has been canceled.

VEHICULAR BEACH ACCESS & BEACH RESTRICTIONS
In order to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales has ordered to temporarily restrict vehicular access to Bay and Gulf Beaches within Nueces County during the July 4th holiday weekend. The temporary restriction of vehicular access will begin on Friday, July 3, 2020 at 6:00 AM and will end on Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at 6:00 AM.

In addition to temporary closures, all beaches within Nueces County are subject to a curfew beginning on Wednesday, July 1, 2020 between the hours of 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM. The curfew will be lifted on Saturday, July 11, 2020 at 6:00 AM.
ADA Access will be permitted with valid documentation.

The Community Pool is open at 50% capacity.

June 30, 2020 – NUECES COUNTY BEACHES & PADRE ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE CLOSED FOR JULY 4 HOLIDAY TO VEHICLE TRAFFIC.

The City of Corpus Christi has released the following:

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – In order to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, Nueces County and the City of Corpus Christi will temporarily restrict vehicular access to Bay and Gulf Beaches within Nueces County during the July 4th holiday weekend. The temporary restriction of vehicular access will begin on Friday, July 3, 2020 at 6:00 AM and will end on Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at 6:00 AM. The vehicular restrictions include golf carts and all-terrain vehicles. Residents and visitors can walk along the beach. It is expected that Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales will sign the Order tomorrow morning that will put this into effect immediately.

This temporary closure includes all Port Aransas beaches. Additionally, the Federal Seashore at Padre Island National Seashore will restrict vehicular access during the same four-day period.

In addition to temporary closures, all beaches within Nueces County are subject to a curfew beginning on Wednesday, July 1, 2020 between the hours of 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM. The curfew will be lifted on Saturday, July 11, 2020 at 6:00 AM.

Residents and visitors can walk along the beach during non-curfew hours but are encouraged to continue to maintain six-foot distancing.

In order to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the City of Corpus Christi will close eight regional parks beginning Friday, July 3, 2020 at 6:00 AM and ending Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at 6:00 AM.

July 4th Fireworks Cancellation

In light of the increase in COVID-19 cases throughout the Coastal Bend and Executive Order GA-28, the City of Port Aransas 4th of July Fireworks Show has been canceled.

As a reminder, visitors and residents are urged to continue practicing good hygiene and safety precautions, including wearing a face covering and limiting gatherings to slow the spread of the virus

FACE MASKS – COMMERCIAL ENTITIES   Effective Wednesday June 24, 2020 and continuing until 11:59PM on July 1, 2020:   All commercial entities in Port Aransas providing goods and /or services directly to the public must require that all employees, customers and visitors to the commercial entity’s business premises or other facilities wear face coverings when in an area or performing an activity which will necessarily involve close contact or proximity to co-workers or the public where six feet of separation is not feasible.

UPDATE March 27, 2020

In an effort to respect the safety measures being mandated by area governmental jurisdictions in response to the spreading COVID-19 virus and to limit the number of guests traveling to the Sandpiper, the Board voted to close for rentals for a period of two weeks effective March 27 extending through April 10.  It is our hope that this closure will serve its purpose to help keep all of our staff, as well as owners and guests, safe from exposure to this serious disease.

UPDATE March 25, 2020

On March 25, 2020 Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales declared a Stay at Home Order for Nueces County.  This document can be found here:CLICK HERE

Following that order the Mayor of Port Aransas gave a Mayoral Order in addition the current Governor and Judge Canales Order:  This Document can be found here: CLICK HERE

the main points of this mayoral order are below.  The mayoral order only applies to the City Limit of Port Aransas and not those properties or beaches that are within the City of Corpus Christi jurisdiction.

These orders go into effect at 11:59 on 3/26/20 for 7 days (April 2, 2020). The Mayoral Orders Include:

1. Port Aransas has within it some RV Parks in which people live. These RV parks are to be treated as “residences” as defined under the County Judge’s Order.  No R.V. may be moved into any RV park within the City.  Those that exit from the City may not return.

2. Day or night camping on the beach using a tent or vehicle or other type of enclosure or no type of enclosure, is prohibited.

3. Fishing from shore whether from the ship channel, jetties or beach is prohibited.

4. Short term rentals are prohibited, except for persons doing Essential Business.

5. Movement exercise, such as walking, running, biking, yoga, water sports, or other similar physical exercise on the beach is allowed. Otherwise, no person shall be allowed on the beach.

UPDATE March 19, 2020

Gov. Greg Abbott announced on Thursday March 19, 2020 (Click here to view executive order)  that he has issued an executive order that requires all Texas bars, gyms and restaurant dining rooms to close. Texas schools are also ordered to temporarily close.   Restaurants are still allowed to offer to-go, take-out and delivery options. The governor is allowing some Texas restaurants to deliver alcohol with any food purchase. The alcoholic beverages include wine, beer and mixed drinks. This is in an effort to help the hospitality industry. The executive order will begin on Friday, March 20 and end on April 3.

The Port Aransas Chamber of Commerce has published a list of those local restaurants that are still providing cuisine options via take out, curbside and delivery.  The list of those locations can be found using the link below:

The Texas SandFest has been rescheduled to October 2, 2020 through October 4, 2020. 

We are currently reaching out to guests who have confirmed reservations for SandFest and communicating this change to the festival dates.  We are working to make sure that those travelers with confirmed reservations are provided an opportunity to have those reservations adjusted to the new dates if they so choose.

The Beach to Bay Relay Marathon has been scheduled to Saturday October 10, 2020
