Build Better Habits NOW and be Confident on the Beach This Summer!
When you think “beach vacation,” is the first thing that comes to mind how uncomfortable you’ll feel in a bathing suit? We’ve all been there. Especially after the holiday season, it’s easy to feel discouraged by how much we’ve slacked on our eating habits and workout routines. If you’re planning a trip to Port Aransas this summer and want to hit the coast with a healthier you, we have some tips for you!
January is notoriously a time when gym attendance and personal training sessions skyrocket. Whether your goal is to improve your overall health or get to a certain goal weight, it is important to do it in a healthy way.*
Whatever goals you are setting out to attain, here are some key insights from James Clear’s best-selling book, Atomic Habits, on how to make your fitness habits stick – and actually work.
Pick Habits that Serve Your Goal
Having a goal is great, but if you don’t commit to a habit that will get you to your goal, you won’t reach it. As James Clear says, “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.” If your goal is to lose 10 pounds by May, choose a habit that will get you there. Do you need to run 3 miles three times a week? Cut out junk food on weekdays? Focus on the things that, if done repetitively, will get you to your end goal. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
Habits are hard because they don’t give us results right away. But over time, they pay off in big ways.
Raise the Bar by Lowering It
We often don’t stick with our intended habits because we aim too high. If you haven’t been running at all and suddenly expect to run 3 miles three times a week, you probably won’t. Raise the bar by lowering it. In other words, set an attainable goal! Start by running 1 mile three times a week, or walking 3 miles three times a week. Incrementally increase your distance and intensity. Make your habits realistic and you’ll often surprise yourself by being able to stick with them!
Do It Imperfectly Anyways
Habits are also difficult to stick with because we tend to give up at the first sign of failure. But, what if we got over our perfectionism and realized that growth involves failure? Imagine you set out to stick to what you believe is a realistic habit for you: running 1 mile three times a week. But, you only make it a half mile before stopping to walk on your first day. What do you do? For most of us, we beat ourselves up and convince ourselves we’ll never be able to do it. One of the best ways to get over this tendency is to commit to doing the habit imperfectly for as long as it takes. Finish walking that last half mile. Give it your best effort again the next day. Doing things imperfectly anyways will increase our stamina and keep us moving forward toward our goal.
Cheers to 2022 and building good habits! We’ll see you on the Port Aransas beach this summer, looking like your healthy, happy, and hard-working self.

Next up in our Island Spotlight series is Cita Port Aransas. Cita features women’s and men’s clothing, home goods, jewelry, art, small furniture pieces, and candles.
If you’re looking for the perfect spot to get unique and affordable Christmas gifts this year, Cita has you covered!
Located in the heart of Port Aransas, Cita is a local and tourist favorite. Customers visiting Cita will find unique treasures from all over the world as well as local products. In true island hospitality, Cita is known for a friendly vibe and exceptional customer service.
Cita’s Story
Cita is owned by Shana Heard, and the store is affectionately named after her children’s name for their grandmother (Shana’s mom), “Cita.” Shana’s mom, “Cita,” was also the person who originally ran the shop.
Shana is a 3rd generation Port Aransas native. She left Port A when she went to Southwest Texas for college, and upon graduating moved to Austin, TX. Shana worked for a furniture company in Austin, where she gained experience and love for the furniture and retail world. After she had her first baby, Shana decided to open Cita. The store was originally located in a small a-frame next to Iries restaurant, but Shana soon purchased the old Island grocery store, Yankee and Betty’s, and opened a larger shop.
Shana hired Miraya Alexander to help run the shop and Miraya has been with Cita for the past 25 years! Shana and Miraya run the entire Cita operation, from product sourcing to running the store to social media to accounting to inventory. Pretty impressive, ladies!
In 2007, Cita downsized from a full furniture store and began carrying home goods, clothing, and smaller furniture pieces. Shana tore down the old warehouse style building and created an entire retail center, where the Cita store is now located along with two other tenants (Georgia’s Children’s Boutique and Palm Republic. Behind the retail center is a cottage boutique hotel, Old Town Cottages that Shana also owns and operates.
Shana prides herself on sourcing beautiful items for her customers to discover and enjoy. Some standard products featured at Cita include:
- A beautiful Italian clothing line for women
- Beach cover ups from Australia
- A gorgeous women’s Moroccan line
- Many home good imports from Indonesia and India
- Beautiful African hats made by a tribe of women that helps supply their clean water
- Jewelry from Turkey
- Men’s Tommy Bahama products
- Voluspa candles
Cita aims to strike the balance between sophisticated and casual, always keeping an eye on LA and New York fashion trends. According to Shana, sophisticated buyers will find the quality they are looking for, and college girls will be able to find trendy pieces in their price range. As the top Tommy Bahama dealer in Port A for the past 20 years, Cita always has something for the gentlemen as well!

Like almost every other business in Port Aransas, Cita was affected by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Cita was flooded with over 12 inches of water and everything had to be torn down and rebuilt. It took 9 months to recover from the storm, but with the help of the community and insurance, Cita re-opened in May of 2018.
Cita currently operates during the following business hours:
Spring & Summer: 10-5pm, closed on Sundays
Fall & Winter: 10-5pm, closed on Sundays and Mondays
Be sure to stop by Cita the next time you’re in Port Aransas. You might just be able to get all your Christmas shopping done in one stop! Follow Cita on instagram and check out Shana’s impeccable taste. Happy shopping!
Quiet beaches. Lower humidity. Great Rates! What’s not to love? Going to the beach in the fall may seem counterintuitive, but it’s actually one of the best times to visit Port Aransas. Instead of sharing the beach with other tourists, you’ll have more privacy and tranquility on the beloved Texas coastline. Instead of waiting in longer lines at restaurants, you’ll enjoy faster service and quieter atmospheres. And since Port A is relatively warm year round, you’ll likely still enjoy a sun-kissed tan – without the discomfort of the scorching summer heat!
You can also enjoy some beach activities with slightly cooler temperatures that wouldn’t be as enjoyable in the middle of summer. Here are some ways we think you’d enjoy spending time on the Port Aransas beach this fall:
Cozy up with a campfire
In Port Aransas, small campfires (3ft. x 3ft.) are allowed. Cooler temperatures provide the perfect time to sit around a fire with loved ones, roast marshmallows, and enjoy good music and conversation. Don’t forget to completely extinguish your campfire area with water when finished!
Go for a Run or a Walk
Take advantage of cooler weather with a nice run or walk along the beach. Running or walking is a great for your mental and physical health – and even more so on the gorgeous shoreline of Port Aransas! Be sure to bring a water bottle and stay hydrated.
Have a Fall Picnic
With fall temperatures, you won’t have to worry as much about food spoiling on a beach picnic. Kick off the autumn season by having a picnic laden with harvest fruits and vegetables that reach their peak in the fall months. Some picnic-friendly fall fare could include:
- Apples with peanut butter
- Fresh figs with nuts
- Pears with cheese
- Bell peppers with hummus
- Kale salad
After Labor Day, most people are not thinking about the beach, which is why you can turn a slice of Port A into your own private paradise. Going to Port Aransas this fall might just provide the rest and relaxation you’ve been looking for. Check availability and pricing on our beautiful condos here.
(That can be used at more than just the beach!)

Unable to travel to Port Aransas anytime soon? No problem! This mango salsa is easy, delicious, and will give you serious island vibes wherever you are. Serve on top of salmon, chicken, or with your favorite tortilla chips. You really can’t go wrong with this salsa – except by not bringing enough to a party, because it always goes faster than you can imagine!
Be sure to check out the tips below to get the scoop on making the salsa ahead of time and getting the spiciness level just right.
Ingredients:
- 2 large mangos
- 6 small avocados
- ½ of a medium size red onion
- ½ of a jalapeño
- 1 bunch of cilantro
- 6-8 limes
- Kosher Salt
Directions:
Begin by dicing the mangos. Check out this video to see how to properly cut and dice a mango. Place the diced mango in a large bowl. Next, dice the avocados, and add to the bowl. Chop ½ of a medium size red onion and add. Next, chop half of one jalapeño and add to the mixture. Rinse and remove the stems from one bunch of cilantro, chop, and add to the bowl. Finally, add juice from about 6 limes and kosher salt to taste. Don’t be shy with the lime juice or salt! Serve immediately and your taste buds will be ocean side in no time.
Tip #1: Jalapeños vary in their spiciness level. Add the chopped jalapeño slowly and taste as you go. If you like spicier flavors, use a micro plane to grate some serrano pepper into the salsa along with the chopped jalapeño until the desired spice level is achieved.
Tip #2: To make the salsa ahead, add all the ingredients except red onion. Wait to add the red onion until just before serving, otherwise onions will “pickle” in the lime juice, changing the flavor of the salsa.
Tip #3: Serve this salsa on top of these salmon tacos (instead of the pineapple salsa suggested in the recipe). For a grain-free, low-calorie option, use jicama tortillas instead of corn or flour tortillas.
Don’t wait to book your next trip to Port A! See how booking direct can save you money.
Welcome to a new series here on the Port Aransas travel blog! The Island Spotlight will take a closer look at some local favorite spots in Port A.
First up? Coffee Waves Port Aransas
Coffee Waves provides artisan espresso and house-made gelato – and is the longest running coffee shop in Port Aransas! They love their locals, their out-of-towners, and making everyone feel at home.
A Love For Coffee and Community
Coffee Waves owner and founder, David Bendett, found a love for coffee at age 33 while living in Tulsa, Oklahoma. David’s friend introduced him to a specialty coffee shop, Nordaggios, which not only had amazing coffee, but was also buzzing with locals who were catching up and hanging out. Having not been a coffee drinker previously, David found a love for an afternoon Italian macchiato (espresso and steamed cream) and was struck by the way coffee brought the community together.
When David moved to Corpus Christi in 2006, he quickly discovered that there were no specialty coffee shops in the city – much less a coffee shop that felt like a local hang out spot. So, he decided to open up a coffee cart in the lobby of his church. Word spread, and similar to Nordaggios, artisan coffee and a place for community to gather was born.
After a few years of the Coffee Waves cart, the first brick and mortar shop opened in Corpus Christi in 2008. In 2010, the closure of an old dress shop provided the perfect opportunity to open a location in Port Aransas. Instead of a full remodel, Coffee Waves used what were previously the boutique’s dressing rooms as seating nooks for studying or hanging out. Coffee Waves quickly became the most popular coffee shop on the island. Now, Coffee Waves is not only a local gathering place, but also a staple destination for people traveling to Port A.
The Best Coffee and Gelato in Port A
In the breezy beach town of Port Aransas, Coffee Waves sells nearly as much house-made gelato as they do coffee. And there’s no doubt why – it’s delicious. They have all the classic flavors – pistachio, Stracciatella, and sorbets – but they also throw in some fun flavors like Milky Way and Salted Caramel (David’s personal favorite).
Coffee Waves lives up to its name with rich espresso, smooth drip coffee, and frozen Big Trains (frozen, blended coffee drinks). The baristas are trained in latte art, so you can expect a beautiful design with your luxurious espresso and perfectly steamed milk. Coffee Waves in Port Aransas was voted the #1 best coffee shop by Texas Country Reporter in 2014, and is still making waves.
Planning to visit with an appetite? Enjoy a variety of paninis and pastries that Coffee Waves offers – and if you’re in a hurry, take advantage of their drive-through.
Weathering Hurricane Harvey
Coffee Waves in Port Aransas suffered a blow when Category 4 Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas Coast in 2017. With over 3 feet of storm surge pushed into the shop, major damage was done. But the staff and community came together, and clean up and renovations began. David’s wife, Amber, took the opportunity to completely redesign the shop, taking Coffee Waves from a dark European atmosphere to a modern and coastal feel. Coffee Waves reopened 4 months after the hurricane hit, on New Years Day 2018.
Be sure to stop by Coffee Waves in Port Aransas any time of the day for an unforgettable experience. Get coffee in the morning, a Panini for lunch, espresso and gelato in the evening – and don’t forget to enjoy live music on the weekends! Coffee Waves is a must for anyone visiting Port Aransas. You might just feel like you’re on the set of Friends.
